______________________________________ [Jun 1,2006 11:02pm - the_reverend ""] I'm using this as "the" thread for the show. first off, the redrum rules. granted it's 200 degrees in here, but this place is really chill, you can fall right out the window, it's big, there is crazy art crap every where, and it's got the barest of rules. throwing shrapnel: this was probably the longest TS I have ever seen. They played some new songs too. Sean basically just stood there and sweated all over the place. I can't even imagine cause sweat was dripping down my back and I wasn't doing anything physically laboreous. I, Destroyer: with in the first minute of starting up, the bass head caught fire. One of the guys from the white mice lent them a head. The first 4 songs they went on to played were new. I'm prett sure they were the same songs they started off with at the livingroom show. Bob tried to play with a strobelight on, but the rest of the band couldn't deal with that. I like the style of the latter songs better, but the new songs at the beginning have a more massive rocking sound to them that make them sound so good. |
_____________________________________ [Jun 1,2006 11:05pm - HailTheLeaf ""] damnit, I so missed this...fucking arrrgh... |
______________________________________ [Jun 1,2006 11:47pm - the_reverend ""] 3 bands left. get down here. magrudergrind: very tight set. These guys rules and with the new CD have come along way from the noise CD before that. They were sort of trapped in by people. I was curious how the singer was going to jump. After he missed the first part that he would usually jump, I figure that was it. but nope, after that, he hit every single jump (except for the end one that I think I got in the way of). They got begged to do another song at the end and so they played a cover. Of what? Don't ask me. some people knew it cause they were singing along. |
______________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 12:40am - the_reverend ""] wow.. I'm fading... fast... 12:30 am two more bands. sanitys_dawn: from germeny and they started setting up by piling beers up. one of them fell and he said in german "it's smooshed." this is makes the second time I've seen them. At MDF, I didn't really care for them. It's that hardcorey scream that is in almost ever song. If I ignored that, they were almost as good as magrudergrind. I heard that yell isn't on earlier stuff. I'm sure the majority of people were there to see them. Plenty of people came up to the front as they were playing.. |
_____________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 1:20am - the_reverend ""] I can't believe I'm still here and awake. yacopsae: their set list was longer than an anal cunt discography. I'm sure these rockers are still on Munchen time and are just ready to cease the day while us american wakers are fighting the sandman. Their set was the same one they played at MDF so it was like a 45 minute set. Like all the other bands I've seen since MDF, they sounded better. The drummer still kills me. He's so good. Unlike MSD, he was sweating a lot, but still made it look efortless. His sticks were hitting like machine guns. They played and encore song which was about 1 minute long. |
__________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 2:22am - demondave ""] I was totally impressed by the drummer of Yacopsae. I ended up sitting behind him on that Skateboard ramp. Watching him play was better than being in front in the smash of people where you could only see so much. I nabbed a discarded set list so that I could find the cooler drum songs later. I'm lucky. Redrum is just down the road from me. And the shows being dirt cheap with BYOB doesn't hurt either...... |

_______________________________ [Jun 2,2006 8:52am - xmikex ""] this show was a complete disaster, and not in a good way. The theme of this post is... Even if You're a Metal Band: Pull Your Head Out Of Your Ass the show was advertised as 8:00, then as 9:00 then the first band didn't play until almost 10. I realize having a job that requires me to get up at 6am is my problem, but holy hell how about giving me a fucking break. It's a thursday night. By 11:00 only 2 bands had played. I don't know if they covered this in music theory class but that's fucking 2 bands in 2 hours. Ozzfest doesn't even keep that kind of schedule. The first band played. They had some decent stuff, and were pretty diverse but it needs work. It seemed like the bass player had better vocal range than the singer and that's a problem. They dicked around a lot, and spent too much time in between songs with inside jokes and dumb shit. They also played for about a month which is a really stupid thing for an opening band to do. All in all it was really stale, and drawn out which sucks because a.) it set a shitty pace for the whole show and b.) i think they could be a much better band. by the time I, Destroyer setup it was already July. Seriously, it shouldn't take a 4 peice band from the area that fucking long to setup. It was really disgraceful, and totally disrespectful to the rest of the show. And I'm not even talking about the bass head blowing out. The bass head thing could have been realized and resolved 15 minutes before hand if they had setup in a timely fashion like a normal band. And what does the singer do after they spend a month finally setting up??? He talks...and talks....and talks....and talks. I was embarassed even listening to it. You'd think after all the dicking around they'd maybe cut a few songs out of their set just to help keep the show moving. No dice they still played a mega long set with plenty of Bruce Dickinson rock star rambling. "...WE'LL REMEMBER THIS FOREVER..." okay Sting. What the hell are you talking about. If you really want to show respect to the other bands, and everyone who came out (i.e. the 20 minute speech towards the end of the set) how about finishing up your set and getting the fuck out of the way so these other bands can play. You're not the metal embassadors to Providence you're an opening band at a show in Olneyville. Once again, this band could be alright if they pulled their heads out of their asses. Macgruder Grind played an outstanding set, and they've gotten so much better than the last time I saw them a few years ago at the middle east. It made it slightly difficult to hate them after the record breaking miserably long time they took to set up. Seriously, I've seen Sevendust setup, and break down faster than that. Great band that could benefit slightly from pulling their heads out of their asses. So Sanity's Dawn is setting up, and they get everything together real quick, doing the SMART thing and sharing equipment with the band before them. Finally, I thought, someone is acting like they've played a show before. Then the PA is fucking up. Rather than someone being there to take care of it (like a normal show) they just let them stand there for 10 minutes barking at eachother in German trying to figure it out for themselves. After 15 minutes of this I see the singer from I, Show Destroyer come out to fix it and I knew the show was doomed. Another 15 minutes worth of cluelessness I'll never have back. Sanity's Dawn was great, that goes without saying. But I had to fucking leave after they played because it was almost 1:00 in the fucking morning, and that fucking sucks. After all I went through to goto that show I had to leave before seeing the band I came out to see all because a bunch of shitheads Helen Keller-ed their way through the show trying to act cool. *****I REALIZE**** that its your show, some people DID in fact come out to see your bands and I am not the center of the universe. But your friends can see your band anytime. Your local fans can see you anytime. When the later half of a show is from another fucking hemisphere you pull your shit together, act like you have a clue and try your best NOT to make a band that came all the way from Japan just to play in Olneyville play at 3 AM. I get it, ya know, if I want a well organized show I should goto some yuppie shit show at the palladium. DIY shows are different, I get that, and if it was a weekend or something I would have stayed out till the sun came up. Hell, out of all the people I emailed for directions to this show I wound up recieving only 1 goddamn response (thank you Throwing Shrapnel). I don't fault Chris for it. I don't even know who I fault really. But somebody needs to do everyone a favor there and PULL THEIR HEAD OUT OF THEIR ASS. |
__________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 9:20am - demondave ""] You know what's really funny? This was the most organized show at Redrum I have ever seen. Six bands and it was over by 2am. xmikex, I know it really sucked that you couldn't stay for the whole thing. But even you have to admit that there is nothing.....formal? nah who are we kidding - There's nothing legal about this kind of show. Eight dollars is the most expensive I have seen. Usually, these kind of shows are "suggested donations". You walk in with your own liquor for godsake. This must be your first Redrum show. Basically, your attending someone's party. Ending at 2am is normal on a weekend. In a club on a thursday in Providence they would be forced to end it by 1AM. But obviously this in not a club. One funniy thing though. Bob said he was going to be cracking the whip on this show. He did, compared to other Redrum shows. I posted a remark joking that Sanitys Dawn would be going on at 11:30pm. He replied no, but sure enough, they did. :-) |
_____________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 9:35am - the_reverend ""] the 2am finish to unholy grave is my only complaint. I wish it got over at 1am so I wouldn't have gotten home at 4am. but that's living on providence time. it's much different from NH time. 3hrs of sleep is a terrible thing to have to code all day on. All shows in PVD don't start until 10:30 usually cause people in that town will not leave their houses/appartment/shantytowns until 11pm. I honestly think that there should be more redrum shows. the venue is totally chill, but I would like to see 8pm doors, 9pm start first band and 1am end (on weeknights) just my 2 cents. |
_____________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 9:43am - the_reverend ""] hm.. and yacopsae or yacoepsae or YACÖPSAE? I'm not sure how I should americanize it.. when you translate a O mit umlaut into english, it's suppose to be a OE... hm.. |
_______________________________ [Jun 2,2006 9:49am - xmikex ""] well if this show was an improvement from earlier shows (i've heard horror stories of 4 or 5 am show endings there) then i'll give the club a point for making the effort to improve itself. But it still needs work. Other than that I think it's a totally chill club, and if it continues to gradually pull it's head out of it's collective ass then I'd like to come back some time. |

____________________________________ [Jun 2,2006 11:19am - RichHorror ""] Knowing Redrum as I do, I'm amazed this show got out so early. It's definitely the earliest finish to a Redrum show I've ever heard of. 2 am Olneyville time is like midnight in the rest of the world. |
______________________________ [Jun 2,2006 11:56am - Lamp ""] Man, I went almost straight from this show to work(no sleep at all) and I think it was totally worth it. All the bands slayed and it started really early for a Redrum show. The 2am ending was a nice surprise too especially considering there were six bands and I was pressed on the clock the whole time I was there. The sound quality was great, I Destroyer sounded a lot better than they did at Giza(all I could hear that show was guitar) and all the other bands were clear too even though I really had nothing to compare it to. Yeah, so maybe the transitions could have been a little faster, maybe the show could have started a little earlier...but as far as shows starting earlier, I think that has more to do with people in Providence than the actual venue. Personally, I'm thorougly satisfied and hope to see a lot more Redrum in the future. |

You know..running a DIY space like we do is ALOT of work. We try to support bands and the scene the way we would want to be treated when we are on tour. Bands who come to Redrum get fed..they get beer/soft drinks...we help find them places to sleep if they are touring...we do TONS of flyering/promotion..and we give them 90 percent of the door. We provide the PA and as much gear as we can lend to help bands out...AND we take ALL the risks of throwing shows that the cops could close down at anytime.I challenge you to find ANY place where you get that kind of deal in the area...see if you get that next time you play the Living Room or As220. Redrum is NOT a nightclub...it is an underground gig space...Redrum is a collective of musicians trying to support fellow musicians. So I take great offence to people talking shit about what we are trying to do...but then its always the people who do the least..that shit talk the most. I'm wondering xMikeX..what exactly you do to give back to the scene? I have been putting on shows in Rhode Island for over 16 years now...we started back in 91 doing shows in our front yard in the woods of Northern Rhode Island with nothing more than a pallet stage and a 100 watt amp for a PA...hosting local bands before they went on to be "legends' like Disrupt,Grief,Taste of Fear, etc and a million touring bands that came through before RI even had a real scene to speak of...16 years later we are still here..still supporting bands from all over the world that come through and we have lost none of our ethics or motivation since that time. So its really funny to me to read Mike Xs review of the night and even funnier that he posted to give "constructive critisism" after slagging the shit out of everyone. Well..heres some constructive critisim Mike...FUCK YOURSELF...get your head out of YOUR ass. I know everyone is allowed to have an opinion (sometimes I think this site should be renamed "Return to the Shit talk"but I actually have respect for the Rev and his hard work and i know its only a couple of cowardly internet warriors that usually talk shit)so Ill post mine now in response. The show started late because people were just starting to come in at 9pm and I wanted Throwing Shrapnel to have an actual audience when they played..they are good kids..and work as hard as every other band on the bill so I figured I'd try to stall a little. So I moved the gig up to 930pm. They were great by the way too..best time Ive seen them yet. I Destroyer had problems from the get go...our bass amp caught on fire a minute into the set...it was tough to regroup. As far as Sting like 20 minute rants...bullshit...I only do that with DropDead(haha)...and I know I said very little at that gig... I have our set recorded and we played for less than 30 minutes minus the bass rig fire. Saying shit like we were "disgraceful"or "totally disrespectful" is absolute bullshit and sounds like a personal thing to me... I suggest maybe you have the balls to say it to my face next time...but like all pussy assed internet slaggers..you wont. Your review sounds more like you had your monthly "flow" and you couldnt take being up past the ungodly hour of 11pm than anything else. For future reference...PVD/Olneyville DIY shows are notoriously late starters...it isnt uncommon for shows to start as late as 11pm down there. One of the reasons is that we are trying to avoid the cops...the other is that Olneyvillains just dont come out early to shows..regardless of how many times we try to get things started early. It is what it is..and we try to do the best we can under the circumstance. Sometimes we have gear breakdowns...sometimes we have overly long set ups but shit happens...and we try to get through it the best we can. AGAIN..we are NOT a NIGHTCLUB.We dont have a crew of pro soundmen and $10.000 gear to work with. So if your gonna be a baby bitch and cry that your all tired for work the next time...and its past your bedtime....drink a fucking Redbull or better yet...dont come. Olneyville doesnt work on the time table alot of places work on...if anything it reminds me alot of the underground scene in Europe where I have literally gone onstage at 4am many, many times...or CBGBS when the last time Dropdead played we went on at 3am. Sorry...thats the way it is...and the bands who play here know what to expect. It is NEVER meant to be disrespectful. The upside is that EVERY band that played last night told me that other than the "late factor"...Redrum/Chris Abomb gave them one of the best/most respectful gigs of the tour. So I guess Ill actually take the bands review of the night over xMikexs because in the ends they are who matters to me. I have a great idea Mike..how about you start your own DIY space and we'll all sit back and see how you carry the torch. But I'm betting its easier for you to just keep supporting the big clubs/promoters that constantly rip bands off and whos only motivation is to profit from bands blood, sweat and years. I refuse to do that...and I will continue to do things on a DIY basis with as much respect and hard work as we ALWAYS give to all the bands that come through. Things dont always run smooth...but they always run...and I think 16 years in is a pretty good record so far....lets see what you got to put up Mike. There are those that DO..and those who sit back and criticize, its always the same. Thanks to all the people who came last night and supported the DIY/extreme music scene and Redrum...we will continue to persevere and you can expect alot more this summer. |

I've been waiting for their CD since November and this was their first show since Dave had his health issue. I'm going to stay out of everything else since I have no right or knowledge because I did leave very early because that cross country drive kicked the shit out of me.
