Bog sounded ok, they had no stage presence though. the bracers kind of lose their power when the arms they are wrapped around just dangle limply to the side.

Nathruzym was way too quiet, the full stacks were not used to their potential. good riffage. ok vocals.

bog always sounds great, their guitars and the drummer's massive kicks are always effective, but the vocals were a little low, and i'm with yeti on the stage show. they've had better nights.

Viskar had me paying attention the entire time, which is difficult. they are an excellent band. they remind me of the more aggressive parts of agalloch. i have a weakness for the black metal influenced post rock style. good epic songwriters, but at the same time, really nothing original and no stand out riffs, which i guess is par for the course with this stuff. still, AMAZING drummer, and the light show adds so much to an already good band's set. you can tell they spend a lot of time on the band and they really believe in what they're doing.

Nathruzym did sound thin. i can't remember if they were a four-piece last time they played ralph's, but they were a whole lot better last time. still, solid great band. i guess they're going on hiatus. don't stop playing.

i'm completely false for leaving before morgirion. i wish i didn't do that right now.

I agree with what you said about Viskar in regards to believing what they're doing and being a tight band with interesting lighting. Not to poop in the punchbowl, but they are by no means blackmetal to me and are a sole representation of the direction USBM is moving in. I love me some post rock and black metal, but can't get into it when the two are combined (usually- depends on the band's style). I've accepted what direction "black metal" is going in now and am letting go of being bitter about it. I was entertained by their set somewhat, but cannot call them black metal. Also, not to be a dick, but the bassist looks like he's in Attack!Attack!

If this band was playing shows 6-7 years ago or whatever, they would have been mocked straight-up. But alas, good artists and musicians for what they are: amusing at times, entertaining at others, but not black metal. Sorry to be Mr. Dink, but I'm just expressing my honest opinion.
Then again, it is what it is. Keep doing what you guys are doing; artistic expression has no bounds.

"USBM" isn't a catch-all term for a specific style. that is so many bands that are doing so many different things. the only thing you can infer from USBM, is that they're from the US, and probably play metal.

True dat. Although I'd argue that when it comes to bands of this style (Deafheaven or some WITTR, etc), I'd say the US is paving the way.

Fair enough Jim - still never meant a lot to begin with - darkthrone never sounded like or agreed with burzum, peste noire is not blut aus Nord, etc. Every band instantly went in their own direction as soon as that sound was discovered. I guess you could argue that euro bands have always been consistently more awesome. If were talking about BM, I would be perfectly fine if the only records ever released were from nor, swe, fin, fra, and ger, but...i only care about good bands, and I should get back to work

Obviously individual bands have individual styles. If one is using it as a description and generalization of the country's sound per se, that'd be completely obsolete in this day and age.
I've ALWAYS organized my black metal by countries and years albums came out. I found it quite interesting in knowing what countries bands are from, especially when there's folk elements involved. This lead me to delve deeper into obscure countries for black metal, and more into Asian metal. In basic principal though, any BM fan that listens to early-mid 90s BM and was to choose which country the band would be from (Norway, Sweden, etc), it should be fairly simple to decipher as both were molding their own niche of a sound at the time. Obviously it's not the same any more, and there's so many bands. USBM to me is simply an acronym to describe that the band is from the US, nothing less nothing more. It's changed, and more and more bands are emulating the euro style. It all depends on how one want to organize their catalogue.. To me, countries and years albums came out were pretty important, regardless of how the band sounds.

@arilliUSBM:
As I just posted on your facebook, you're taking the USBM label and using it for geographical purposes. That makes sense, I get it.

Before the cross-breeding of styles, location meant something for sound, now it doesn't. So yeah, like the lords of obviousness pointed out already, USBM is good for location use only, not to describe the sound. Hating USBM as an entity is hating AMERICA, not the sounds it produces, lol
 _______________________________
[Jul 22,2011 3:08pm - mutis ""]
As far as different sounds, directions... whatevs. Black Metal is black and is metal. A lot of the so-called "transcendental" bands people are always arguing about, though some may play some good music, are not usually black metal. Blackness is a diverse word, but only encompasses elements such as hatred, depression, malevolence, bleakness, and overall negativity. This can also be portrayed via harmony and melody, especially with chromatics, tritones, minor 2nds etc. But if a band does not have this blackness, they're simply not black metal.

Also: this thread is racist!

I guess we're all on the same page then. When speaking the acronym USBM for geographic purposes, it should not make people angry.
As using it to describe the country's sound, well, that's quite dumb now because the country is HUGE with millions of people in it, and the number of black metal bands far exceeds that of say, 10-15+ years ago.
The point that I was trying to make is that at one point in time, it was much easier to figure out which country a band was from just by listening to their sound.
Example, if no one knew who Dissection was and heard them for the first time but knew the general difference between Swedish and Norwegian black metal, it should be EASY to figure out they were Swedish. Then again, none of this could really matter to most; I've just always found it an important ideology to have while discussing black metal.. knowing which country the band is from. Only typing too much on a useless topic in a thread for last night's show is real.

Agreed. I've always found location to be good to know because it adds another level to comprehending a band's work: regarding regional politics, culture, natural environment, neighboring influences, etc.

It isn't like that anymore, and any tr00sters (like Mr. Conservative) should relinquish their 1950s mentality and accept that diversity is real and an undeniable construct.

In a related note, one could also argue that Dawn's Slaughtersun is a melodic death album and not a melodic black metal album. As with many other albums by many other bands. I also heard that some band called Darkwor is a USBM melodic death metal band.

Out of respect, I don't give out people's last names on a public message board. Nicholas knows who I'm talking about.

Nicholas said:Not that it matters, but I'm honestly curious what you guys would classify us (vattnet) as? I usually say blackened post doom or something like that, but I really have no idea.

Same with Oneiric Realm. I usually write from the lens of black metal but letting the music morph into what it will is what gives the tunes a sense of genuineness in my opinion.

I listen to female-fronted russian pop when I'm depressed, which really fucks up the composing process.

How about Light Hug? That doesn't offend anyone. OK, it's settled then.

Its great to see so many black metal bands. Back when we invented black metal while watching the 2009 Star Trek reboot we were not sure it would catch on. Maybe I can use my connections with terrorizer to hook you guys up.
