How do we make Boston metal again?[views:38349][posts:142]_______________________________________ [Jan 18,2007 4:36pm - EriktheViking ""] This shouldn't be rocket science. Boston mentality is a Metal mentality. But not enough Metal music to go around. What gives? Besides the obvious solutions (like rounding up the Emo kids and executing them) what do you think can be done about getting more bands into more venues? There are enough places to play, especially in what used to be a Metal hotbed (so I'm told), Allston. What's the problem? Not enough believers? Suspicious venue owners? |

I think one of the biggest problems here is that there are more bands then there are fans. How is a show supposed to have a good turnout if there are 6 other local shows on the same night? If there were a few less bands, there would be more kids going to shows instead of playing them, and the bands that were around might enjoy more success. Problem is though, no one is willing to just not be in bands (I don't blame them). Just a theory. |

____________________________________ [Jan 18,2007 5:50pm - BornSoVile ""] Once O'Briens opens up again everything will be cool. I don't understand why more than half the people in this thread bitch about the metal scene when they've done nothing to be apart of it and fail to support it on a regular basis. Go to shows, buy merch, and get to know your fellow headbangers, it's as simple as that. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SCENE THEN LEAVE. |
__________________________________ [Jan 18,2007 5:51pm - Niccolai ""] Also, I think the LAST thing the boston metal scene needs is a good venue in the 'shows all the time' sense. You might think that, but that's what hardcore though before Romans. Romans is a cool venue with shows every friday, but the thing is, since there are shows in brockton EVERY friday, whenever local bands play there it's hard to turnout more than 70 people. The reason is because everyone in that scene has been to brockton so many times and seen the bands that play there so many times that it slowly looses it's appeal. Boston needs a venue that has a show about twice a month, and books a good out of state headliner. The venue would need to be very consistant with schedualing, all ages, and would need good promotion. Venues leave promotion up to the bands to much. That would mean people wouldn't lose interested in going to the venue like if it had shows multiple times a week, there would be better turnouts, the bands would get paid well, and it would be over all more unifying. Bands also need to play fewer shows. Alot of bands are like "we want to play every weakend, as many shows as possible, ect". It's very important for bands to schedual their shows in balance. If you play 7 nights a week every week, who the hell is going to come out and see if you if they already have 90000 times? Under those conditions, Massachusetts bands would flourish instead of struggling to keep there head above water with 9 million other bands every weakend. Again. Just a theory. |

__________________________________ [Jan 18,2007 5:57pm - Niccolai ""] Also, Fests every once in a while would be a massive help. Chariot of fire fest, bostons dead, bitter end fest, ect. Nothing better and more unifying for metal than hundreds of kids in one room to see a handful of bands play. a much better alternative to 30 bands playing 6 different venues on the same night with a 50 person turnout in each one. |

Also when bands desperate to put 'we played with so-and-so' on their presskit are willing to whore themselves out to paytoplay venues like Mark's, you are enabling those scumbags. If no bands would work with them, they wouldnt be able to pay the tour guarantees without doing any work, and they wouldnt be doing metal shows because then the lazy shits would actually have to promote to make back their money. There'll always be bands willing to buy into that pay-to-play shit though, so Mark's and it's ilk will continue to thrive and more and more great tours will be coming to Bedford, NH as their only Northeast date instead of Boston or Worcester. _____________________________________ [Jan 19,2007 2:37pm - Sacreligion ""] OB's smelled funny the last time I was there(October, I think...on my birthday actually) there's nothign wrong with Worcester, it just scares outsiders...there's a lot of cool, good bands from here and the surrounding areas i think not enough people go to shows because they're poor...it's the truth...they'd much rather spend $10 to get shitty at home then go out to pay $5+ for a cover and another $20+ on beer, not to mention gas and food and such it's a sad reality but i think it's true...that and the fact that there really isn't an AWESOME band from around here anymore...there's a lot of good bands, but not one that everyone can get behind. the genre divisions are killing it as well. when i used to go to gay nu-metal shows there'd be all sorts of different types of bands, but every person would stay and watch every band, that's a rare occurrence now |
_____________________________________ [Jan 19,2007 2:40pm - Sacreligion ""] also, a lot of people on here don't recognize what goes on outside of the metal scene...there are a ton of rock bands, rap groups, younger metalcore bands, techno, etc. that you'd never hear about but draw huge numbers to their shows the fact of the matter is that not many people really like metal |
_____________________________ [Jan 19,2007 2:55pm - Dar ""] Too many 21+ venues is what always killed it for me For the handful of local bands that I liked enough to actually go out just to see them, I'd say 80% of the shows in MA where at a venue I couldn't get into and a good deal of the smaller nationals as well also to me looking at the lineups of a lot of local shows...it often didn't seem like bands were booked based on a common sound, maybe just slapped together cuz of mutual friends or whatever here in san francisco where I'm still really new to the scene, there are numerous tiny "underground" all ages venues that frequently put on metal shows, there's the Gilman which is also all ages (usually punk shows but GHOUL are playin there soon) and if you go to a show where a band like Hatchet or Fog of War (local thrash bands) are playing, the bill will most likely have 3 or 4 other thrash bands on it too. |

If you want to bring metal back in boston get your fat ass off the computer and start a band that will blow every other band in the area out of the water. Then when those stoooooopid middle school kids start showing up to your shows, buy your merch and provide your gas money to get home, and put food in your stomach you can get your fat ass back on the computer and talk shit to the rejects who make fun of those very same kids. Bottom line is we need all the kids we can get because bands playing for bands sure as shit isn't getting the job done. So shut the fuck up and do something positive in the (minimal) metal scene around here. So what if the kids' parents are loaded? Their fault? no. So what if they're in middle school? Yeah kid grow up faster so you can be old and waste your life on return to the pit and bitch about the scene. They are the future for this scene, so lets degrede them because they're impressionable and young and watch MTV and drives dad's cadillac on the weekend, good plan. Because I love playing in front of TS, BMR, Goreality and Abnormality every show. Fuck anyone else seeing me play. :point:gay |

__________________________________ [Jan 19,2007 3:52pm - Niccolai ""] You wanna know another reason boston turnouts aren't as good as they could be? People are bashing that atreu77 person, solely for their name. I know they are a noob, and I know they are lieing when they say they've never heard of Atreyu and only names themselves after the little indian guy from NES, and i know they probably own at least one thursday shirt, but think about how many potential show goers/merchbuyers/show bookers never develope due to the metal elitist attitude chasing them off. By all means, make fun of Atreyu and it's cool to give people a hard time if they fit a stereo type, especially one you think is fruity, but it's the kids who listen to bands like Atreyu that are the impressionable ones that will go to shows, and support bands. I know some of you are saying 'we don't want those kids at our shows anyways'. But think about how many of them there are. If you can impress a mallcore homo with a handfull of decent metal bands, they will move on and denie that they ever listened to any gay bands (just like everyone else does). By the way atreu77, we are all capable thinkers on this board and don't need a revolutionary that no one can identify. This is a good place to network and get involved in better metal than you already are cought up in, so don't ruin the opprtuniny by giving these guys reasons to make fun of you. I recomeng that you read before posting, and not try and jump on the revolutionary bandwagon without knowing anyone here. Are my rants in this thread getting to gay? |

I think there are some pretty simple reasons why there is more happening around Worcester these days. Most of the people I know have the same attitude: Go to shows, have fun, meet new people. Most people are open to making new friends and getting more shows to happen. It's not any kind of scenester B.S. It's just simple logic. If you like going to local metal shows, and you want to continue going to local metal shows... keep going to shows, don't start unnecessary drama or be an asshole for no good reason, and if you can do something to make sure that the good shows keep happening (like booking a band or inviting a few friends to come to a show), do it. It's not rocket science. |
