guitar tone question[views:8644][posts:31]________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 8:26pm - George ""] what kind of setup does nasum use? rotten sound has the same guitar tone as well. i'm talking really really beefy and thick. lots of low end, but not so trebley that it's just chug sounds. it's full and bassy and thick as fuck. alot of grind bands have this kind of sound and i think it's awesome. i dont like scooping my guitar cause it cuts out all the volume. but it sounds like it's scooped but there's something different about it. anyone know anything about this? |
________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 8:45pm - Hooker ""] Not sure. That dude Mieszko looks like he has a shitty Ibanez RG or Satriani ripoff going into a rack. I couldn't find many live pictures of them and even then I still don't know what they used in the studio. Tell me what you use for equipment and I'll try to help you out. Or I'll just insult you because I'm a dickheaded gear whore. |
___________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 8:46pm - blue nli ""] the guitarist of rotten sound currently just sports an esp viper with an emg 81 in the bridge going to a dual rectifier. i cant really help much beyond that cus im really not a fan of the pickup or the head. |
____________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:27pm - gonzofiles ""] use the Mode Four and oh it's got balls |
___________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:34pm - blue nli ""] mode four, meh. marshalls attempt at a dual rectifier in my opinion. |
____________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:38pm - gonzofiles ""] still sounds good to me |
________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:41pm - Hooker ""] That mode four is embarrasing. |
____________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:44pm - gonzofiles ""] you talk crazy talk |
___________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:49pm - blue nli ""] i dont talk crazy, but im pretty anti marshall. the jcm 900 was the last head i actually cared about from them. |
____________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 9:54pm - gonzofiles ""] hmm i dont really care for Marshal either but i tried this amp and i liked it...i didnt care what brand it was, it sounded good |

_________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 11:26pm - George ""] i use an ampeg v4b with a ratt pedal, for clean i use an eq pedal and lower everything so they're some gain but not alot. im not nessicarily looking for that sound, i like not being over gainy, but i'm curious if i decide to. i'd like to have numerous guitar sounds. |
______________________________________ [Aug 31,2004 11:41pm - RustedAngel ""] no matter how much rack gear you have, you can't compare to the tone of a head. |
________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 12:25am - George ""] rotten sound didn't sound like that when i saw them live, so im thinking it may be a studio trick or something. either way, its pretty awesome. sean, sorry, but the mode four is pretty god awful. |
____________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 1:21am - RustedAngel ""] dave suzuki uses the mode 4, sounded pretty good to me. |
____________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 1:24am - RustedAngel ""] blue nli said:mode four, meh. marshalls attempt at a dual rectifier in my opinion. how is it an attempt at being a dual rec if the mode four doesn't even have a power tube section? all it has is a couple ecc83's. I still haven't tried one, but I'm interested in trying one, Al/goratory offered me to try his, I'm going to take him up on that offer. |
_________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 1:52am - powerkok ""] george, it was prolly simple eq'ing in the studio, or maybe he uses a graphic eq...it could be a million things. Tube heads rule. Theres 12 tubes in my fucking mammoth 100 lb head. |

I know you all want to touch the hand of the man that touched terence's (from fucking ascendancy) guitar, stand in line. |

_________________________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:43pm - GORATORY not logged in ""] I have seen threads about the mode four quite a bit with people bashing them. I personally think that it is the best head on the market for the kind of music we all play but if you like a really mid rangey tone then you are not going to be happy with it. I think that it is one of the few heads that can provide a scooped sound at a high volume and stand out in the mix. Many scooped sounds get lost in the mix so it is always hard to get clarity and I have never had a problem with the mode 4 with that. Also, as Tom said, Susuki uses one and even managed to get a nice mid range tone but as I said, it is not your best choice for mid range. For mid range I would recomend a Bogner. I want to know some of the things you guys don't like about the mode 4 if you guys could throw some of your opinions up on here. |
___________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:46pm - blue nli ""] ive just felt like its way too fuzzy for me. not enough low end chunk, and too much of a rectifier clone sound. |
_____________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:48pm - RustedAngel ""] the only other complaint I hear is from TUBE GURU's saying it doesn't compare to an all valve system, which even though I've never tried it I somewhat believe... That doesn't mean the amp would sound bad though. |
___________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:50pm - blue nli ""] im far from a tube guru(duh if i use a pod pro), if it sounds good, it sounds good. |
_________________________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:56pm - GORATORY not logged in ""] the only all valve system I liked was Madison heads. Most all valves are weak souding in my own opinion. Not many people that do reveiws play death metal. Blue nli - ive just felt like its way too fuzzy for me. not enough low end chunk, and too much of a rectifier clone sound I just don't think you had enough time to fuck with it man. The left channel which is tubed, does have the rectifier sound but can get very gainy on scoop but the right side which is valve puts out an all low end chunk on scoop while maintaining clarity. Sit down with it for a while and I'm sure you'll get something you like out of it. It just sucks that at most guitar shops you can't really crank a head and really get to fuck with it cause the valve side, which is the good one, really doesn't get to its full potential untill cranked. |
_________________________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 10:58pm - GORATORY not logged in ""] THE ALL TIME BEST SOUND i have ever heard though was Severed Saivor's new rig with an Engl preamp. I had never heard Engl before but it blew me away. |
___________________________________ [Sep 1,2004 11:41pm - blue nli ""] yeah, engls kick ass. but i hate to toot my own horn, but my fav guitar sound has got to be ron kachnic(malignancy)'s sound, which happens to be from a line 6 podpro, which i very much endorse. |
_____________________________________ [Sep 2,2004 4:49pm - diamond_dave ""] strings have a huge part to play in your tone. the thicker the string, the thicker your tone is going to be. i use 14's. tuned down to B, it's the same tension as 11's in E, but the tone is way thicker. also, you HAVE to have lots of gain to sound the way those guys do. and if you run a tube amp, it has to be loud. tubes sound infinitely better (in my opinion) when they're pushed hard. also, many people ignore this fact: your speakers have more to do with your sound than anything. celestions are a good all around choice. there are others that are good for a nice dark sound, i'm sure. celestions do me well. |
