I think I've changed my mind about this whole deal. Vinatieri's great in the clutch but otherwise overrated. He ranks like 18th and can't really be counted on when down by the 50 yard line (not that Belichick goes for 50 yarders but is that because he knows Vini's not up to it?). Don't get me wrong, I love all the great mammarys Vini's given us and hate to see him go to the Colts but all you & I can do is have blind faith in the powers that be that at the end of the day, when they're done crunching their numbers, they're leaving us money for players we need. How 'bout some receivers? I heard it mentioned that if they had paid Vini the cake he was asking it could've created a slippery slope raising the bar to a new high that would end up fleecing the organization for future kicker deals. In other words, if you get a kicker coming along boasting that they're capable of putting up 3/4 of the numbers Vini did then suddenly the organization owes them an explanation as to why they're not going to pay them 3/4 of the money Vini pulls down. In my opinion, it's more to do with greedy agents than salary caps. I also heard that Vini wanted out of here so bad he canned his old agent so quick that his new one didn't even have the authority to put together a new deal for him 'cause of some 3 day waiting-between-new-agents clause the NFL has in place. I don't no why that rule exists but there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than they're letting on. Frankly, I think Vini got his nose bent when they didn't throw a bucket of cash at him and he was faced with his real numbers instead of his legend. The fans treat him like a rock star here but he may not have enough gas in his tank to rebuild that reputation else where to the point of cult status where he gets the endorsement deals he had here (can you say Johnny Damon?). That's easy money one makes for just showing up, holding a Dunkin Donuts coffee with a smile and no late hits. Fuck it now that I really think about it.
