The French would come back and beat the Mexicans at Puebla, take control of Mexico City and install Austrian aristocrat Maximillan Hapsburg as Mexican Emperor, but the morale boast of beating the French on May 5th would carry Mexicans through three years of war without the U.S.'s aid. |
