pam nli said:
Well (and I am absolute LEFT) I totally agree that we are better than those monsters, I get fucking furious over our guys being beheaded. We are better because we don't cut peoples fucking heads off. Do you think the left doesn't agree with that? Or am I missing what you were trying to say? Because I don't think any leftie would disagree that we are better people than those fucking animals. I don't think every right winger is a fucking lunatic like Ann Coulter or O'Reilly, so don't think every left winger is like HailTheLeaf, ya know? I think the Abu Ghraib thing was blown up so much because when people, normal everyday people, think of our military, they think of them as noble people, and what those soldiers did was less than noble, and the media loves a SCANDAL. There's no scandal in those barbaric fucks acting the way they do...it's expected. I'm not sure the punishment should have been so severe for those soldiers, but I do think they should have been punished. I think the worst part is that with these people having no fucking souls, it bothers the hell out of me that with all we do, they can still saw off someones fucking head on TV. We can't do that, we're fighting people that don't even give a shit if they die. It's fucked up. I guess what I'm trying to say is good point. ;)
It's all in what's reported and how much. Go to Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch's websites. AI's first article on it's home page is about detention centers (and if you don't think it's a direct reference to Gitmo, then you're very naive) I admit, those on the right would obviously push the story of the two marines more than Abu Ghraib. But, as referrenced above, I think it's the right way of reporting. The enemy is so much more barbaric than we are, and our reaction to our own crimes is, in my opinion, correct: We believe that all those crimes committed by handfuls of soldiers are bad and should be punished, but we don't believe they should be played nearly as much as now because they are a very small part of what happens in Iraq (they should be known about, obviously), and they don't represent at all what the whole military is like. However, the terrorist acts against the Iraqi people and the two Marines are COMPLETELY in step with the entire insurgency, and represent everything that the isurgency is about, which is why terrorist tactics and attacks should be played a lot more in the press. To answer your original point, lefties like you and (to a slightly lesser extent) ShadowSD are like moderate muslims; we know you're out there and you greatly outnumber the Hail the Leafs, DailyKos and Democratic Underground assholes 100-1. However, just like moderate muslims, you don't speak out enough, and eventually Hail the Leaf is all I'm hearing.
