the_reverend said:
my rule is more that I had to live on a farm and decided that I couldn't kill the animals myself anymore. If I can't do the means myself, I don't deserve to partake in the ends. I think that unless you could kill/have killed a cow and chopped it up, then eaten it, you shouldn't be able to. what about Eggs/milk? I lived with chicken for most of my life. I see no problem in feeding them and taking their eggs. same with milk.
I would support small, organic and free range dairy and egg farms if need be. But I feel very healthy and happy not consuming animal products. The main sources of meat, dairy and poultry come from a business which cares only for profits, and puts very little or no thought to an animal's welfare. Large dairy farms keep cows impregnated year round for continuous milk production. Cows are separated from their babies, usually immediately after birth. The males are sent to veal farms and the females kept as future dairy cows (If you are buying milk you may be supporting the veal industry). Cows are fed hormones to produce an abnormal amount of milk and suffer health problems. Chickens in factory farms are packed into small cages their whole lives to produce eggs. If they are not producing enough, they are sometimes "force molted" (egg laying induced by starvation). Because they are kept so close together, they would peck at eachother, except that their beak tips are removed, usually without anesthesia. It sucks for animals in the US meat and dairy industry. If you care, I think you should do what you feel you can for animals (vegan, vegetarian, or meat eater) Even meat eaters can enjoy vegetarian food too and eat less meat. The reality is, factory farms exists because of the huge demand for meat and dairy. Even eating less animal products will make it easier for factory farms to be replaced by smaller farms. If you eat meat or dairy products, support your local organic/free range farmer!
