______________________________________ [Sep 25,2006 8:56pm - acariyanick ""] LINCOLN, R.I. -- A long-time Lincoln Little League coach was killed when he was struck by a vehicle at around 11 a.m. Monday while he was on Walker Street. Police Chief Robert Kells said that Randy Hien, 57, emerged from his pickup truck that had been parked and was cleaning leaves away from his truck when he was struck by a passing vehicle. "We heard someone screaming and he was standing by the car and I walked down the street and I could see the accident victim lying in the street," said Lauren Miller, witness. "(The driver) said he did not see the pedestrian as he walked out into the street. It was very much a surprise to (the driver)." According to police, the motorist, a man in his 20s, then stopped his vehicle and called 911. Hien was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. "When you did speak to (Hien), it was always upbeat and positive even though he had his own concerns and health problems," Kells said. "He never wavered. He just continuously stayed positive. It was a pleasure being around him because you know he was going to be that way. It was just nice to talk with him all the time." Police said the crash is still under investigation and would not release the identity of the driver pending its completion. Police said no charges have been filed against the driver. Known for his baseball knowledge, his enthusiasm for the game and the love for his players, Hien was a local treasure in Lincoln. The coach had been involved in Lincoln's Little League program for more than 25 years. Hien led Lincoln's 12-year-old all-star teams to five state championships, two New England regional titles and two trips to the Little League World Series. In 2004, Hien became an inspiration to the community when he guided the town Little League team to the Little League World Series after nearly being killed in a car crash. Hien leaves behind a wife and six children, three of them are under 5 years old. |

Our band played the Living room many times in the early 1980's. I moved to Colorado 15 years ago and have not seen him since. Strange, a few days ago I was wondering about what he was up to these days. Wished I could of talked to him again. |
