guitar cab suggestions?[views:10640][posts:50]______________________________ [Apr 29,2007 10:28pm - cav ""] i have a peavey triple x...i tried brians mesa and avatar today. they both sounded better than my peavey. im leaning towards a mesa but id be willing to try some other stuff. |
___________________________________ [Apr 29,2007 10:36pm - kylenli ""] try a sony. they make great stuff. |
_______________________________________ [Apr 29,2007 11:22pm - Joshtruction ""] Vader. |
______________________________ [Apr 29,2007 11:34pm - ZJD ""] If you liked the avatar then go for the avatar because they are cheaper than everything else. |
_______________________________ [Apr 30,2007 12:07am - blue ""] avatar. thats the way im going for my next cab. |
__________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 1:05am - Niccolai ""] I would actually avoid mesa. They are built well and sound good, but you could get identical sound and construction from a handfull of other companies for a couple hundred bucks cheaper. |
_____________________________ [Apr 30,2007 9:19am - cav ""] well i liked the avatar but it didnt sound as full as the mesa with a little less low end but that may be because brians avatar has a semi-wierd combo of speakers that i cant remember at the moment. |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 11:15am - aeser ""] i like marshall 1960a/b cabs. not as dark sounding as many others, let the mids come out quite a bit more. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 11:19am - brian_dc ""] yeah, only reason I got the Mesa was because it was pristine/used for $500. The Avatar has 2 Eminence 30s and 2 Celestion G12-75s in an X pattern. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 11:19am - brian_dc ""] but you can order what you want custom from avatar. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 11:21am - brian_dc ""] you could order an Avatar with 4 Vintage 30s and it would be the same speaker setup as my mesa. However, they use a lighter wood...birch I believe...so it won't sound exactly like the mesa. |
_____________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 1:17pm - Passerbyer ""] Get a Behringer |
_____________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 2:56pm - horror_tang ""] You can get a nice Randall 4x12 with 75 Watt Celestion speakers for about $200. |
_____________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 3:09pm - hooker nli ""] mesas are too bassy. get a used vht. or a good ol' marshall 1960. i have a vht and a bogner and the marshall still kicks ass. |
__________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 3:17pm - Niccolai ""] The amount of cubic space inside an amp has more to do with sound then the wood it's made of. When it comes to cabs with vintage 30 speakers, there are price differences from like $500-$1100 and the main difference in sound is going to be the size of the cab and interior space. You might find that the 750 dollar standard sized cab sounds better through your head then the 1100 oversized cab. If you're looking for a deal, check out a marshall 1960 or one of the new crate blue voodoo cabs. If you're going to spend any more money then that, then you might as well go custom and not bothering with expensive production cabs like mesas. |
_____________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 4:55pm - Passerbyer ""] Fuck shat. Get a Behringer |
______________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 6:13pm - BlackoutRick ""] best cab for the money- peavey 5150 or a 412ms |
______________________________ [Apr 30,2007 6:35pm - blue ""] the above statement is false. avatar cabs are the best cab for the money. |
______________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 7:33pm - Joshtruction ""] blue said:the above statement is false. avatar cabs are the best cab for the money. While there are cabs I like more than avatar, this statement is 100% true. lopo also makes some dirt cheap bad ass cabs. |
_____________________________ [Apr 30,2007 8:36pm - cav ""] thanks for the help dudes, any idea what speaker combo i should go with in order to get it to sound a little fuller like the mesa. the one i tried has 2 Eminence 30s and 2 Celestion G12-75s in an X pattern. but i liked the mesa a little better. it had a little more clarity and a little better tone overall. |
______________________________ [Apr 30,2007 8:39pm - blue ""] mesa cabs are solid and everything but i reccomend going for an x-pattern in whatever cab youre going for. |
__________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 8:42pm - brian_dc ""] I couldn't be happier with the combo of my mesa and avatar. Blue, is your new head John's old Framus? |
_____________________________ [Apr 30,2007 8:43pm - cav ""] blue, any idea what speakers i should go with? |
_______________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:00pm - GoatCatalyst ""] try an earcandy and then you can back me when i tell every other dude to shut their pie-hole because they're wrong |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:08pm - brian_dc ""] damn dude, have they offered you a job yet? I know for a fact that Cav can't afford Earcandy cabs. Plus I'm not going to be running out of any less than 8 speakers any time soon (not because I need to be huge, I just like the blend of two cabs) so I don't know if he could keep up with just 2. cav it would be like $700 for 2 2X12s from Earcandy. Might be worth it, but that's the bottom line there. |
____________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:10pm - contagion ""] i had a 1960 A that sounded awesome with my dual rec and tony's XXX. id go with a B though just because the slanted front is scary when the amp looks like its going to fall off. framus sounds real nice with XXX too, but are costly. and dont go for just speakers (IE a randall Cab), the wood makes most of the difference. thats where most of your low end comes from. |

________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:18pm - Hoser ""] Buy my cab.... Mesa Boogie Rectifier slant cab... It's a year old. It's near fucking mint. It's a slant cab.....no, not oversized slant. Just a slant. 4X12 Celestion Vintage 30's. I'll sell it for $600 - $700. Highest bidder wins because I have a son on the way and need loot. |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:20pm - Hoser ""] By the way...it's heavy as all hell and sells for $900 new. It's mint....BUUUUYYYYY IIIT!!! |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:20pm - Hoser ""] Oh and it has rad casters. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:23pm - brian_dc ""] hoser's cab is exactly like mine. Cav knows how much I found mine used for, but he also knows how the market works and stuff. |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:27pm - Hoser ""] Well criminy!! Is that a good price for mine? I figured as it was nearly brand new that it should fetch some loot. |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:27pm - Hoser ""] Cav, make me an offer I can't refuse. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:29pm - brian_dc ""] honestly, you're not far off from what I got mine for. I can't believe what a steal it was. When I bought it I told the guys in the store, you realize you're f'ing crazy right? And one guy admitted that he appraised the cab down in price because he planned on buying it himself right before he got off work. ha! |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:34pm - Hoser ""] Hahahahahah wow. Great deal. Man, these things are WICKED expensive cabs as you know but tell me they aren't built like fucking tanks. Heavy bastard it is! |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:40pm - brian_dc ""] I've had mine for about 4 years now and the only damage is a little bit of cosmetic wear. Thing is a beast. |
________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:43pm - Hoser ""] Hell ya. |
___________________________________ [Apr 30,2007 10:56pm - powerkok ""] I love my triple rect cab. Its a straight cab (bottom), and its a little bass heavy, but I can manage that with preamp settings. The cleans are better than my 1960a were, and I think it actually projects more than the 1960a, which is saying a lot. |
_____________________________ [May 5,2007 12:41pm - cav ""] i think im gonna go with an avatar 412 and 212. im thinking of getting vintage 30s in the 212 for the bottom but im not sure about the top speakers yet. any ideas? |
_____________________________ [May 5,2007 12:41pm - cav ""] and whats good about the X pattern thing? |
_____________________________ [May 5,2007 1:33pm - blue ""] dude, if your gonna go for an avatar get the hellatones. im going to be getting the vintage 4x12 with hellatone 60Ls and 30s in an x pattern. id prefer an x pattern cab because it has a little more tonal variety (depending on what speakers are chosen, 2 for lows and 2 for highs esentially) and the X pattern allows for even dispersion to the audience and to your ear as well. |
____________________________ [May 5,2007 1:48pm - cav ""] i see i see |
____________________________________ [May 5,2007 3:38pm - xanonymousx ""] i've been thinking about getting an orange one of the aviatars for a while now |
____________________________________ [May 5,2007 3:51pm - xanonymousx ""] the only thing is that you have to buy avatars direct so i will be buying my head then the cab at different times. but the avatars seem to be worth it |
______________________________ [May 5,2007 9:39pm - Eric ""] Depends on the type of sound you want. An open back cab will give you a loose sound. A closed back cab will give you tighter sound. I would avoid MDF, does'nt have a natural sound. Anything else is fine. The speakers will make the biggest difference of all. I recomend texas heat |
______________________________ [May 5,2007 10:12pm - blue ""] the avatars are birch close backed, nothing to worry about. |
______________________________________ [May 6,2007 10:01am - Joshtruction ""] Eric said:Depends on the type of sound you want. An open back cab will give you a loose sound. I recomend texas heat Some of the most expensive and exotic studio monitors in the world are made from MDF. I am talking ones that cost more than any guitar cab you can think of. MDF actually has great acoustic property, it's jsut not as strong as birch and other woods. Given the purpose of cabs (being able to hold up to touring) MDF is not always the best choice, but there are still ltos of cabs made from MDF. Basson cabs for example uses MDF. |
____________________________ [May 6,2007 3:21pm - cav ""] alright here is my plan... avatar 412 traditional (black w/ wheat grill) with 2 hellatone 30s and 2 hellatone 60s in an X pattern with an avatar 212 traditional (black w/ wheat girll) w 2 hellatone 60Ls....sound like a good idea? im thinkin of splitting the bottom one too with a 30 in there instead of two 60Ls just to make it a little more diverse but im not sure. looks like itll run me up about 850 for both. not a bad deal. |
_____________________________ [May 7,2007 9:54pm - blue ""] i say keep the 2x12 for 2 60Ls. |
______________________________________ [May 7,2007 10:12pm - GoatCatalyst ""] that's a sexy plan, cav |
________________________________________ [May 9,2007 5:00pm - metal_church101 ""] I have a Peavey 5150 cab. It's been doing the trick for me. |
