$500 for my 90K thing. jebus.
I should have told them about the fact that the mileage is off by 1/20 mile every mile

Fucking tell me about it. Rotted out (rear) brake line, on a 13 year old minivan (that I just fucking put a goddamn transmission in like an idiot), STARTING at $600. Fuck this shit, seriously.

Yeah, unfortunately my girlfriend's sister is my insurance agent; that'd go over like a lead balloon filled with farts in church.

That's really not much, man. At 90,000 miles, usually you need to replace your timing belt. That, combined with regular maintenance can cost around $1000 at the 90,000 mile marker. If you drive a standard, you're looking at even more.

Rev, is this for your hybrid? What did they need to do to it?

usually i just get a brochure that shows all of the maintenance/checks that they do on those tune ups, show them to my dad who's been a mechanic since the age of 6, and he tells me what stuff i actually need from the list. after that, i take my car to a small auto place and get everything done for 1/4 of the cost most of the time

seriously, if you look through those little brochures that detail what they do, more than half of it is "check fluids, check brakes, check tire pressure, check belts, blah blah blah," which are all things that should be checked anyway at a regular oil change.

I hear you with that. They want to take everything apart to inspect it. Once you take the transmission apart, it never works the same after. I'll have my maintenance done elsewhere as well.

even the guy at the dealership that i bought my car from said to get the diagnostics brochure, then take it to a different mechanic that you can trust, and save the receipts for whenever you you trade it in so the dealer sees that there are records of maintenance.

I just bring it in for oil changes every 5-10K.
they tell me what I need.

Ok, I know for a fact that I need to replace the serpentine belt on mine, the computer's fucked (get this - approximately 25% of the time, after I turn off the car and take the fucking key out of the ignition, the van turns itself back on, starts the engine, and closes the windows - it's a goddamn ghost car), and there are random other things wrong with it that are probably gonna mean I can't get it inspected (and it's due) - as much as it kills me to part with the Black Metal Minivan, I think I gotta cut her loose. 'Course, now I gotta find some new wheels. Yecch.

'94 Dodge Caravan. It's the "Super Sweet Pimp Model" sports version or whatever, with the steps on the sides and power ball washers and thirty cupholders, too - I'm gonna miss her.

I fucking hate New Hampshire's lack of lemon laws when it comes to used cars.

Dear Subaru I bought two weeks ago, thank you for running great from the lot to my front door then REFUSING TO EVER RUN AGAIN

Who would have thought that a fine libertarian tradition could be diluted to "Why yes, duct tape will hold that exhaust just fine." in a little over 200 years.

no lemon laws are a cunt but the weakest emission laws ever make it pretty fun to build a street/strip car. i contemplate moving to new hampshire for this reason alone.

If you have a razor and find an unlocked car you never have to get your car inspected.
