When I said that I meant in terms of gas mileage and durability. My cars have a habit of breaking down on me after a year or less.

though i can drive stick, in an age where every car comes in an automatic version i seriously oubt the importance of being able to shift manually, unless you have a job that requires it (dump trucks at work, etc).

that being said get a camry or an accord, man. those cars are fuckin time capsules. you could park one in your yard under a car cover for 2000 years and it would probably fire right up.

yeah but try getting any honda/toyota that somewhat current for like 2k. good luck. same goes for Geo Prisms. those things are like 3500 all day everyday... manual or auto. subaru's actually arent that bad and can go forever, too bad they can be expensive as they tend to hold their value.


i know about the american big cars because thats all my family could afford and thats pretty much all we have had. hell we have a 91 grand marquis now and it keeps on truckin. when i was 14 we bought an 88 town car with maybe 240k on it for 400... that shit lasted 2 years and 5 accidents before a brakeline and a fuel line split and it was just cheaper to buy a newer car.

Subarus are also one of the most expensive cars to fix, but they are hell-damned reliable...i put 30k miles on mine in a year and the only thing that went was the radiator (which killed the head gaskets)

if your problem is finding a reliable car, check out the consumers buyers guide. Honda's and Toyota's are fucking solid and extremely dependable and easy to maintain. my old corolla went 5 years without any sort of breakdown other than normal wear and tear items, then i sold it like a moron.

i seek out the huge American cars. i've had really nothing but bad luck, but they are too awesome to pass up. one car i would kill for is a 1978 Mercury Zephyr. oooooh man.

automatic transmission: 200lbs+

manuals also cost less. why would you pay more to waste more gas? especially when you can then put another 1/3 richhorror in your car.

my 94 accord was 2200.... with 170k
drove it for 70k before getting rid of it.
dont buy one of the American cars listed above...imho

those american cars listed above are the best bets for 500-1200 seriously. if you can, buy an old police package, those fuckers last forever. i also wouldnt recommend them if throughout my whole life, my family didnt rely on them. seriously, got a mercury zephyr wagon for free that was supposed to be a hold over car until we got another... that car lasted 6 years and went all around the east coast. i wish i still had that car, it would be big pimpin with a tremec 5 speed and a 5.0 right now.

the only to be weary about is the town cars that came with air ride... the air ride shits the bed all the time and it will be like 1000-1500 everytime unless you know a guy. had an 88 caprice wagon, only gave it up because the intake manifold gasket went and it would have been cheaper to buy a new wagon. we could have still driven it around because it behaved fine but it wasnt worth risking it, since it was the band equipment hauler.

just because a car doest say "honda" or "toyota" on it and doesnt have a 4 banger, doesnt mean that its an unreliable piece of shit. the ride comfort you get out of these cars is far superior to the japanese cars. the only things that are better with the jap cars is resale value and gas mileage.

they are also easy as shit to fix (the GM big cars are a little harder because they cram their engines closer to the firewall for better weight distribution and a better center of gravity). hell, why else would i be shooting to own another GM station wagon? they dont make cars like that anymore...
