that guy was hired gun (yes and a good sax player) for that" band" (as the rest of the band was, because Dave Matthews is a talentless ass clown and needs a super backing band that could make up for his suckness), he probably did the best coke, smoked the best weed, and layed the hottest chicks. Good for him RIP.
LeRoi founded the band with Dave and Carter. He wasn't a hired gun. And like his music / hate his voice or not, Dave is an amazing song writer and a pretty unique rhythm guitarist. Some of the song structures that guy comes up with boggles my mind. If you try to follow along to some of his shit it really does remind me of song structures you'd find in metal. Changing to different time signatures mid chorus, cutting bars off of parts of a song to make for an interesting transition, and even just playing totally fucked up syncopated rhythms... it's all done very well and still manages to flow seamlessly. You don't notice the parts are there until you really look. I also give him/them credit for taking a mix of rock/jazz/fusion and making it so popular. Nobody was doing this when they started in the early 90's. Nobody's really doing it now. What kind of watered down pop band has a team of world class musicians (including a fucking fiddle player) playing for them and manages to mix so many styles together and do it well? Also, disregard all radio songs for this conversation. The songs people usually know are the few gay ones that the radio plays over and over again. The same thing happens with a lot of bands. People end up hating them based off the 2 watered down hits the media gags you with. I think people hate Dave for 1 (or 2) of 2 reasons: 1) His voice. The dude can actually sing, and sing quite well, but a lot of his songs (especially some of the more popular ones) his voice is just weird and a little hard to be liked. 2) The bro-dude frat guys and dumb whore sorority sluts that hype him out. This is one I can't stand. I don't know if I could ever go to a show of theirs. It would totally fucking ruin it for me. "Dude brah, play Ants Marching or Crash. Fucking sick brah, jagerbombs, date rape, dude." So nobody can say Dave sucks without backing this shizzle up. Stick with "he's a faggot and I hate his voice". It also should be noted that off-stage Dave Matthews seems to have a completely fucked up and weird sense of humor. It's pretty funny actually, considering all his lyrics are about fruity stuff. -End gayness.
Gayness shall end and that's cool man, I saw dave doin his thing with an acoustic and shit and I thought it sucked ass, however his song structure is good now that you mention it I just don't dig on it. Right... Our first bassist was big on the jam band shit and I thought Dave was a open mic/bartender dude who happened to playin one night and was "found" by some label fella(and hooked him up with a fab band? but I have never cared as much to actually research-it up. But when i was playing drums the few vid's I actually had were Carters and Pearts and that shit blew my mind, especially carter open handed technique, and his hats off to copeland, so maybe I just dislike Dave(from experience?) but those fellas are talented, I would take boyd any day of the week that emeff can play a violin Biaaatch.
