Cult of Luna - 'Eternal Kingdom' anybody?... what are you guys digging these days....[views:2118][posts:29]_______________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 12:19pm - The-Rooster ""] Anybody besides me digging the shit out of this record? I can't get enough of it. I've been spinning it for like 3 weeks now, constantly. So heavy. Production is sick too. Not the usual drum machine sounding kit. Huge guitars. Psychadelic effects. mmmmmm. I know some compare them to ISIS, but this shit clowns the newest ISIS record. Baroness is another band that is blowing my mind these days. I did FOH for them last week, and was floored. What non-death metal stuff are you guys listening to these days? |
_______________________________ [Nov 25,2008 12:41pm - Yeti ""] i was listening to Static-X "Wisconsin Death Trip" the other day, that album is great. |

It's all NeurISIS worship, but it's done really well. I picked up a Mouth of the Architect album a couple years ago on a whim, and I didn't get into it. Thought it was pretty boring. Had its moments, but I ended up just trading it in at the local record shop towards something else. There aren't many bands that pull this style off well, IMO. Neurosis has the bar set REALLY fucking high. Cult of Luna is really fucking good though. I think there's something in the water over in Sweden that just makes people over there grow up to start ridiculous bands. I've been getting back into "Red Sea" era Isis lately too. I wish they would do another balls out heavy album like that. |

While I'll recommend MotA to someone who seems to dig Cult of Luna and Neurosis, I don't listen to it as much as Neurosis or Cult of Luna. I really can't deal with new ISIS. They've got whatever new following came with the Tool association and I think that's just the future for them. |
________________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 1:57pm - My_Dying_Bride ""] MotA's albums do not do their live shows justice and i actually think the same for the majority of the bands in that particular genre. emotions are harder to capture on record and im suprised these bands dont have much of a live repertoire. i'd like to see cult of luna live. |
__________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:02pm - brian_dc ""] word is that Cult of Luna will probably come around to the US next year since Eternal Kingdom is getting some attention over here. |
____________________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:05pm - MikeOvDecrepitvde ""] I'd think Mouth of the Architect are better songwriters than Cult of Luna. The Beyond and Salvation are good albums, but not as memorable as Time and Withering or The Ties That Blind. The last ISIS album is their first disappointment, but they released 3 albums that set a high standard which has yet to be matched. |
____________________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:06pm - MikeOvDecrepitvde ""] I think* |
__________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:08pm - brian_dc ""] See, I think Somewhere Along the Highway and Eternal Kingdom are much more mature in terms of songwriting than their earlier stuff. |

I also think that this is what separates the really great bands from the "I listen to them once in a while" type recordings. Neurosis's albums definately do them justice. I can't think of many other band that sounds as huge and heavy as they do on disc. Seeing them live takes it to a whole new level, but doesn't take away from the impact of the recordings. I think the new Cult of Luna has a similar effect. I imagine the live show being just a bigger sounding version of the recording. |
__________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:10pm - brian_dc ""] Neurosis was by far the best live band I've seen in my life. |
____________________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:10pm - MikeOvDecrepitvde ""] Somewhere Along the Highway is also good. Finland might be the best song they've written thus far. |

I love everything up to that last one. 'Panopticon' being my favorite. Personally I'd love to see them get back to some of that 'Red Sea'/'Celestial' sounding stuff for the next one. But I doubt that'll happen. |
_______________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:13pm - Murph ""] I'll just say I love CoL a ton, and "Eternal Kingdom" has been number one on my 2008 list since I first heard. MotA for me is a bit different than both CoL and Neurosis, as their use of Mellotron and song structure seems to me more depressive doomy than the introspection that CoL and Neurosis build into their albums. MotA's "Quietly" is number two for me this year, that album is slick, gorgeous, and hearing some tracks live, totally stands on its own in the CultofNeurISIS trend that has hit. Callisto from Finland is also wayyyyyyyy up there for me. If you've yet to check them out, get "Noir" and "True Nature Unfolds." NOIR is amazing. |
____________________________________________ [Nov 25,2008 2:16pm - MikeOvDecrepitvde ""] Me too, the last album had the weakest sounding distortion, I didn't even think it was ISIS at first. And yes, both Neurosis and ISIS put on extremely powerful live performances. Neurosis is dangerous without ear plugs. |
