I want to get a laptop that I'll be using primarily for photo editing in photoshop, and maybe a little bit of gaming once in a while. I don't understand how they compare.

Discrete graphics will obviously play games better. You also won't be sharing system memory with the graphics card since most discrete graphics for laptops have dedicated memory.

One thing I can't seem to find any information on is this: What are the equivalencies between integrated graphics and graphics cards? If I had, for example, a 256 card, what if any level of intergrated graphics would match that performance?

what brand are you looking at?
I looked at the dell's. the Dell XPs 15" with 4GB RAM, 7200rpm HD, 128MB video card, and a T8300 processor. it was $1454 with out any discounts.

there are small business dell work stations that have 512MB graphic cards, but they are over $1400. I do all my photo-editing on a dell d620

I've never owned a dell, and I hear mixed reviews about them. So far, the best thing I've noticed about them is that their website makes it easy to configure your computer the way you want it. Some people tell me Dells suck, but they've never given me a valid reason why, so sure, I could go for a dell. Lenovo looks like you get the same shit a little bit cheaper.

Dell sucked before 2005.
Lenovos are IBMs and you are going to spend 1/3-1/2 more for a lenovo.
if money wasn't an option, I would get a lenovo w700 or w700ds. My IBM was more solidly built than any Dell. I would stay away from hp/compaq or gateway. Toshiba's are "ok" but slower. Sony's are awesome, light with the latest technologies... but they break easy.

change the processor to:
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)
the display to
14.1" WXGA+ AntiGlare
and the memory to
3 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM) or
4 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)

and it's not bad. though I would get the $25 fingerprint reader.

I had my first Dell laptop for almost 6 years, and it'd still work now had I not broken the screen.

I now have an Inspiron 1525 and I love it.

The worst part of Dell is the customer service, they're all outsourced and a total nightmare, other than that, I've never had problems.
