_____________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 9:52am - ouchdrummer ""] Buddy Rich is quite possibly the most famous drummer ever. He's the one who used to dual on the sammy davis jr. show with Gene Krupa. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ5B7yqDYbA You're welcome. |
_____________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 9:53am - ouchdrummer ""] He did rudiments like he was born doing them. He used one drum in more ways than most drummers could use a whole set. |

____________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 10:00am - arktouros ""] really dude, look on youtube for Krupa, BR, Jo Jones, Max Roach...these guys are fathers of modern drumming. to this day there are only a handful of drummers (and musicians in general) in the world that can begin to reach their level. they all sold their souls to the will of satan to be the best drummers the world will ever see. |

_____________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 10:38am - arilliusbm ""] plenty a great musicians never cared to read music. |
______________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 11:21am - ouchdrummer ""] arktouros said:lol, i'm sure he could read it, hell i can read it, but i doubt he followed it or notated his performances. If you're playing with big bands all the time like he did, the chances that he didn't read (or couldn't as Garret says) ANY sheet music to get time changes is strange. I'm not saying it's downright impossible, but i've read a whole lot about him, and i've never heard that statement. |
_____________________________________ [Jan 15,2010 11:26am - arilliusbm ""] Agreed. When you're surrounded by musicians of that calibur you've got to at least know the basics. Given he's a percussionist though, I'd say the chances of him reading it as well as Gillespie or others, is quite slim. Jazz is more about the free flowing progression of theory anyway. Unless parts are specifically composed, they aren't reading music as it is mostly improv. Jazz is incredible to watch, especially of you catch the same wave as the people playing the music. |

How you play within the beat in jazz can indeed be very freeform. But.... whether or not you can play within the beat without reading music, you still need to be able to read music to know where the meter changes are. And yes, those are organized within even jazz compositions. |
