that sounds to me like you are just taking pictures of buildings and are not trying to do architectural photography.
If you were doing architectural photography, you would need one of these

you have a DX camera so
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/18-50mm-f28-ex-dc-macro-sigma
That would cover the range you want. it's like a 24mm on a FF camera.
Tamaron, nikon, and tokina also make a 18-50 f/2.8 range lens. Look on:
http://www.dxomark.com/
for their sweet spots ans see if you live with it. I have the 17-55 nikon f/2.8 and it's my favorite/most used lens of all time.

hahaha well I use a d40 and am in no way a seasoned photographer, just a hobby running on a few years with slr.

so I guess my next question is, what are some good lens for a beginner?

and I guess by architectural you mean like if I were to be taking pictures that needed to be in real life proportions and not distorted, if so then yes I am taking pictures of buildings and not architectural, I just didn't know there was a difference.

if you were doing architectural photography, you would need a PC lens otherwise your pictures would be bad. You would need to keep in mind straight lines instead of weird angles.

You just need something that is in the range of 24-80 on a FF camera or 17-50 on a DX camera. f/2.8.

then you stop it down to f/8-11 and get really good images. If you were shooting canon, i would suggest the 17-40 f/4, but since you aren't and the 16-35 f/4 nikon is too much cash, a good solid 17-50 range is perfect for what you want.

yeah I would start with the top, though the lens for the bottom is amazing, I can't justify spending over a thousand on a hobby haha. maybe in a few more years after some more learning, but I have definitely outgrown the standard factory issued lens.

www.photosone.de has a lot of lens charts on them to help you decide.
