One of my favorite bands was sludgey- Acid Bath. That said, I must say that it's quite overdone now and the hip crowd is currently latching onto it. Doesn't mean the band is bad or "hipster," but it seems to be popular right now. In b4 someone says "i like music for music"
i honestly believe its because that style of music is more accessable to play for a broader ranger of people interested in playing music. Lets face it, if you listen to Nile and suddenly become inspired to take up guitar and learn how to play some technical death metal, the learning curve is much higher and im sure people are a lot more likely to give up when the going gets tough. Sludge on the other hand, not even from a perspective from someone who plays guitar (i dont) seems way fucking easier to handle on guitar and therefore someone who may take interest ends up playing something thats on an easier skill level However, when i think of Electric Wizard i think of Doom, but the Doom/Sludge similarity can cross over quite often without being one or the other specifically
