THIS! Tupac marked the beginning of Rap's downslide towards complete mediocrity. If we're talking strictly mainstream rap, you could say that, I guess. There's a lot of great MCs in the underground though. |
________________________________________ [Apr 17,2012 10:07am - hauptpflucker ""] Well I have been relatively recently reintroduced to some really awesome current underground stuff. And really that was a major generalization, there have even been a few decent mainstream things that have happened since. |

_____________________________________________ [Apr 17,2012 10:08am - arillius_the_white ""] Tupac and Biggie were the apex of mainstream rap imo. Yes, the underground has great MCs, but nothing tops early to mid 90s mainstream rap. The shit today is AWFUL. on the rare occasion when I wear a backwards hat and listen to rap in my Honda Civic, it's strictly older stuff |

The shit today is AWFUL. on the rare occasion when I wear a backwards hat and listen to rap in my Honda Civic, it's strictly older stuffAs far as being artistically sound and not just looking to hit it big, I would have to agree with that. I'm not saying Tupac wasn't talented. He hit it big because he wrote rhymes that hit home for a lot of people in his more serious songs, as well as write catchy, "booty shaking" songs for his less serious faire. In that aspect, he was very versatile. The exact same thing can be said for Biggie, but IMO Biggie was a way more talented MC. I wasn't huge on Biggie either, to be honest, but if I'm comparing the two, I'm picking Biggie every time. That said, I favor a lot of their contemporaries: Dre, Snoop, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, The Fugees, etc. I think the reason Tupac and Biggie rose over everyone else while they were alive was that they had some serious songs that people related to come out, and that's not something most of their contemporaries did. Then, they both had tragic deaths, and as we all know, once you die, you become a god a lot of people's eyes no matter what you did when you were alive. All that said, wake me up when they reanimate ODB or J Dilla. Then I'll be interested. |

____________________________________________ [Apr 17,2012 1:33pm - arillius_the_white ""] Hypothetical question: If, say, Hologram technology gets so advanced that they could visually replicate a whole entire set from a band, would you go see it? Say, 1972 Emerson, Lake and Palmer or something. As long as the concert in its entirety was taped and the technology is there, I don't see why it couldn't happen. Ethical, unethical, stupid, or not? Saddening is more like it. |
______________________________ [Apr 17,2012 1:40pm - ark ""] 1) how would the audio be handled 2) sitting in the crowd, it would feel pretty lame knowing it's not a real band. lamer than a pink floyd light show. just watch the dvd. |
______________________________ [Apr 17,2012 1:41pm - ark ""] 90's rap was the fucking shit though. pop and underground. but then when home recording started getting big...underground took a nosedive. |
