Not really. I just think it lolzie when people prefer copouts. It's no big deal though, could be MUCH worse. I have a friend who now refuses to read Les Mis because she saw the movie and doesn't "have the time" to read a book. People like THAT are eyeroll worthy. At least "I have a long list of books to read already" is valid.
spence, why should she read the book? if i saw othello with lawrence fishburne, am i losing anything important in my life, some spiritual enlightenment by not reading the original? a copout infers that it's a failure of responsibility, which it isn't. maybe she really doesn't have the time. a lot of people don't have the time or the attention span to sit down and stare at a tome. it's a major timesink proposition for someone to break out of their habits and get into a book. a lot of people can't do it. and i contend she isn't missing a damn thing by not reading the book. game of thrones isn't some classic work of literature that's required reading in school, it's high fantasy crap written with vivid language and some socio-political commentary. i have read some of it, it's entertaining, but there's plenty of media to consume out there, and i've read my share of fantasy. GOT is a good soap opera to sit down with my girlfriend and see some good acting (which I always enjoy watching). it reminds me of when a member of an older generation says "you listen to band X when you've never heard miles davis??" and you know what, why should they have? some people just have the will to dig deeper in some areas more than others.
