as ridiculous as it might sound, I find that generally speaking my opinions on movies tend to coincide pretty well with those of the AV club from the Onion. Their reviews, although tinged with humor because of the obvious, are usually pretty spot on.

According to one Hobbit film forum, some are saying there is a Dol Guldur subplot. I know Sauron as the Necromancer was only mentioned briefly in the book, but I've always been fascinated by Mirkwood/Dol Guldur and the thought of Sauron toiling away in his stronghold.

I don't really want them to make up events that didn't happen, which is something that irked me about the LOTR films (which, by the way FotR > rest of the trilogy).

I wouldn't mind them diverting from the journey for awhile to just get a glimpse into Dol Guldur and see what Sauron is up to. Obviously the writers/directors would be making the imagery up as we've only had our imaginations to go on, thus far, but as long as they didn't botch it like they did with Minas Morgul, I'd be into that.

[Dec 6,2012 10:21am - HEY IDIOT DON'T BE AN IDIOT DUH  ""]
There is material other than the Hobbit and LotR to draw from. Has anyone been to the Tolkien section at a book store recently? Also, the third movie was stated to literally be made of leftover scene from the first two. That sounds pretty lame. Finally the Hobbit IS A FUCKING CHILDREN'S STORY! HAVE YOU EVER FUCKING READ IT? IT'S CLEARLY WRITTEN FOR KIDS. So if the movie is a little bit juvenile then it would be honoring the reality of the book.

NOW WHO WOULD MAKE A CHILDREN'S MOVIE THAT'S 9 HOUR LONG EVEN IF IT IS BROKEN UP INTO THREE PARTS. That seems to be the real question.

Still, I'm going to go see this in fucking IMAX 3D because I CAN!

I WASN'T DISSING ON THE SILMARILLION BUT IT IS BORING AND I SHOULD DISS ON IT. THE REAL POINT IS THAT LIMITING YOUR VIEW ON AVAILABLE MATERIAL TO DRAW FROM PROBABLY SETS YOU UP TO ASSUME THE MOVIE IS TAKING LARGE AMOUNTS OF ARTIST LICENSE.

THE LOTR TRILOGY MAKES SOME BASIC MINOR CHANGES. THE BIGGEST ANNOYANCE IS THE FOCUS ON HUMANS AND THE LOVE STORY BULLSHIT. BUT THE PUBLIC LIKES HUMAN AND CAN IDENTIFY MORE WITH THEM SO THAT MAKES SENSE, AND THE LOVE STORY CAN BE EXTRAPOLATED FROM THE APPENDICES SO WHATEVER.

Also, what's up with Saruman casting weather spells on Caradhras? That scene could have been a bit longer and far more grim. They were being tormented by the ancient evil that was born from the mountain itself. "The Cruel", indeed.

You cant use the cartoon as a comparison, there were tons of inconsistencies from the book. For instance, the scene where they escape the trolls because the trolls stay up all night arguing over how to cook them and the sun rises and turns them to stone was changed in the cartoon so that Gandalf shows up and magically makes the sun come up. I like the cartoon, but it's definitely not a shot for shot translation.

I'm glad it took 600 posts of you clowns debating movie times to get to someone actually discussing the film.

There's a lot to criticize, but overall I was happy.

1. The film is very LOTR-4 after-though-ish. It has the same production design, and basically the exact same score as all 3 of the LOTR's.
2. Forced "LOL Radagast is t3h dRugz0rs" pipe smoking scene. Was that really the time for comic relief?
3. The voice of the Goblin King was Dame Edna.
4. What the hell was with that awkward video-game-y button mashing scene where they escape from the goblin kingdom?
5. Film tries way to hard to cram Dwarfy McDreamy in there and yeah Kili and Fili don't even look like dwarves.
6. Just like in LOTR the dialog goes to shit real easily (RE: Tolkien puking in his grave over "Let's hunt some orc!").
7. I'll say it again because it's worth saying twice: I wish they could have found a way to make this it's own movie and not just another LOTR. It's like Peter Jackson only knows how to make 1 movie that isn't Meet the Feebles, and is content to make it 6 times in a row now.

Criticisms aplenty but not the "biggest letdown of all time."

They're the youngest dwarves in the company, it's mentioned in the book that Kíli is practically beardless because he's so young. Also most of the shit that people keep referring to as "padding" is actually from the ROTK appendices.

Man I'm glad I didn't see this in 48FPS

The one improvement that this film had over LOTR... For every single LOTR film there was at least 1 confused black couple in the theater mumbling through the whole movie and then leaving pissed off at the end trying to figure out what the hell they just watched. This time the only 2 black people in the theater got up and (loudly) left during the opening exposition.

i can't believe you fools who had high expectations. this was exactly what i knew it was going to be. what about the book, or the last 3 movies made you think it was going to be any different than it was? it's a kids book, that was a kid-oriented movie. You can tell Peter Jackson didn't give a shit what any purist blowhard was going to say, and i commend him for that. i wonder why some of you even went, you knew what it was going to be like, and you went in prepared to hate it.

Don't elves and dwarves have a common ancestor? do any of you know what dwarves look like as youths? it seems the makeup artists used the idea that they become more stumped and dwarvish as they get older.

all in all, i'm just happy it was made. to hope for purity is foolish, that's not how it works anymore. i can remember the same bullshit being spewed about the first LOTR movies, and now people love them.

It had potential to be great, but Jackson half-assed it. I don't think the film-making aspect of it was all that good. I understood the tone going in, but it was definitely half-heartedly strewn together for money. I don't think he put his heart and soul into this movie, I'M SORRY FOR BEING A PURIST.

If I can make a couple of generalized inferences here.... The LOTR trilogy was very well executed IMO even considering the omission of Tom Bombadil, Scouring of the Shire, some events being sequenced differently, and so on. The quality of what was done was still recognizably high.

With The Hobbit, there is a general sense of hackery and a step backward in overall immersiveness. The specific points people are listing as being disappointing are a need to articulate what is more of a general "this just isn't that great" impression.

Lightning isn't likely to strike twice, especially after a decade of epic-fantasy-overload.

Basically, Yeti's first two sentences.

Denny’s is in the middle of a new Hobbit-themed promotion.

Before I say one more word I want you to seriously consider what I just said. DENNY’S! I’ve talked about Denny’s before, but let me make something clear: I like to build my own grandslam but I despise Denny’s, and when I discovered that they were partnering with the Hobbit I flipped out.

That’s NOTHING compared to how much I flipped out when I saw that they’re offering “Radagast’s Red Velvet Pancake Puppies.”

Is anybody else pissed about this? For the love of all that is holy.

For those of you that don’t know, Radagast is a wizard from the Lord of the Rings universe; and just like all wizards he is given a specific color. Remember how Gandalf was “the Grey” and Saruman was “the White”? Actually when Gandalf came back he was suddenly “the White” and had a new cloak and staff, remember?

So what color do you think Radagast is?

BROWN! Radagast the freaking Brown!!!

I seem to recall seeing “Red Velvet Pancake Puppies” on Denny’s menu within the last year. You mean to tell me that Denny’s—the powerhouse brand that America loves so much it’s being associated with some of the most anticipated films in history—is recycling an old menu item and presenting it as new, while SIMULTANEOUSLY associating RADAGAST THE BROWN with RED pancakes?!?!

AAAAAH!

And to top it all off, the Twitter mobile site doesn’t seem to work for me anymore, so I wasn’t able to tweet about this and demand an answer from Denny’s until hours and hours after I discovered it.

Talk about first world problems—I got middle earth problems!

Here's the deal. The Hobbit is a short children's novel. It's a couple of hundred pages that could be read in it's entirety in less time than going to the movie. The part of the movie that is the Hobbit was decent. Maybe even as good as the Lord of the Rings. I'm sure once the others are released, if you were to edit out most of the non-essential fluff and total fabrications you would end up with a concise single movie that could stand up to the Lord of the Rings. It's not like I didn't enjoy the movie, but it wasn't great, and was barely good. I wanted more.

The reason why people are comparing them is because Jackson asks for it by trying to tie them in together. The filmmaking was MUCH better on the Lotr movies.

Pretty much agree with everyone here about the disappointment, but i'd like to add that I found the recycling of music from the LotR movies not only horribly uninspiring, but also just plain inappropriate and downright distracting.

The story is about a god damn treasure hunt, there's no reason to be using the same dramatic music that they used for saving the world.

LOL THORIN IS ABOUT TO FIGHT A COMPOSITE CHARACTER ORC, BETTER USE THE SAME MUSIC WE HAD GOING WHEN FRODO ENTERED MOUNT DOOM.

The best part about the movie was the fact it successfully portrayed Thorin as the douchebag that he is, which is apparently not the popular opinion on his character.

[Jan 3,2013 7:47am - arilliusbm ""]
I thought the soundtrack was awesome, yet not has memorable as the LoTR soundtrack. Howard Shore can do no wrong, IMO. I'd gladly walk through Howard's Shores unless it was red tide.

I think it should be said, however, that the reoccurring musical themes shall also be used at tying the LOtR movies in with the Hobbit. The opening theme is one of the most somber, yet epic pieces he has written. He was the man for the job, though; I don't see John William's style meshing well with it, or anyone else for that matter.
