I thought this was gonna suck considering the last album and almost didn't bother to listen but the original guitar player is back and heard good things. Sounds good thus far. I will have to say the artwork sucks ass though. It seems they have returned.

See, I told you the only reason this album might be redeeming is the fact that Jon Levasseur is back.

It will amuse me if they just released two tracks that are slightly reminiscent of Whisper Supremacy, only to then douche everyone with a full on Incubus/Deathcore hybrid style, again.

I never got the hype with this band, even their older stuff is pretty painful to listen to IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I still respect these guys.

It's kind of like how I am with Suffocation and Origin. These bands do cool things and are obviously talented as fuck, but I personally just can't get into that more brutal side of death metal.

As a whole though, it wouldn't surprise me if this album is mainly their newer deathcore shit - just with one or two "good oldschool" songs.

^ agreed.

It's been so long since I was nuts over Cryptopsy that I'd have to make an effort to really get back into them, but I'll check these songs out in a little bit.

I remember kids used to flip their lids over these guys, they were one of the pillars of death metal through ATYB. You could sense they were struggling to "hang on" around the time of None So Live which was a good effort with its vocalist. But the fall from grace for them in the last decade was maybe the biggest downward spiral for any major death metal band. Lately it was looking like when the history of death metal gets written, Cryptopsy would be reduced to just a footnote when once they were demigods. They have an uphill battle to get back up in the pantheon.

I like all their older material. Just Lord Worm was a unique vocalist and had character. Before I bought it,
I remember listening to Whisper Supremacy tracks on mp3.com when the album came out and that site was good.

Don't really care too much for brutality and technical wankery.

If it doesn't have some aspect of brutality/aggression/hatefulness, chances are it isn't death metal, but some other sub-genre.

Or currently, it's some faggots wearing girl pants that are pretending.

Also, the Craptopsy track isn't terrible, and certainly not as laughable as the last album. BUT, I did see at least 2 instances of faux-hawks on the YouTube clips. Is it that the French just can't help but look gay?

I consider aggression/rageeeee to be something different from brutality.

Aggression is something found in punk, thrash, all death metal, etc.

I think Obituary, early Sepultura, Pestilence, Death, etc, etc. is all aggressive as fuck. (and awesome)

I think Dying Fetus, Suffocation, Brain Drill, Cattle Decapitation, etc. is brutal as fuck. (and not my cup of tea)

There is certainly some aspects of brutality in Obituary, early Sepultura, Pestilence, Death, etc. and I like all these bands as well. Though they are not the same type of death metal as Dying Fetus (boring), Suffocation (good up to their EP), Brain Drill (boring), Cattle Decapitation (needs to go away), or Origin (fairly awesome). Some bands just do it right and others don't.

I just don't like the overproduced, MEGA BLAST BEATS, technical wankery death metal.

I'm also VERY picky when it comes to harsh vocals and can't stand pig squealing, most black metal vocals, etc.

No I definitely don't like grindcore, at all.

I like Dystopia but they have other genres fused, and I like some Carcass. But that's really about it.

I wasn't saying brutal death metal and aggressive death metal were genres, I just think of brutality as the descriptive term to the death metal I don't like.

Damn dude, seems you need to brush up on your shit.

Dystopia is definitely NOT a grind band and I wouldn't consider Carcass one either.

Aside from this, what bands would you consider to be grind?

The simple answer is:

Death metal should be gritty, not over-produced. It was never meant to have pop-like production. I don't care what sub genre it is.

I always just considered grind to be bands like Phobia, Nasum, Napalm Death, Insect Warfare, etc.

Based off what i've heard and seen live, it was just never my thing. So I never cared to properly identify the genre.

If you have any bands that will totally shatter my perspective on grindcore though, i'm welcome to suggestions.

I dunno, probably not. You seem to have a decent grasp on it, though I can't get into Phobia and Nasum anymore and only like 80s Napalm Death and Insect Warfare.

I've got a good handle on all kinds of primitive stuff that sounds like the olds these days, but probably not your thing.

One thing there's an outside chance you may dig...

Absolutely love the first 4 albums. The first 2 especially were a big influence on my bass playing & drum programming for the most recent Despoilment material and some of the stuff I was writing during the last days of Bane of Existence.

I guess I can sort of understand the "not being into the categorization" thing, but being a guy who prefers to not just know, but know why I like a band, I like genre discussions a lot. Not to mention, if you're able to sort bands like you would sort books in a library, it's easier to find more cool shit to listen to and get other people into more things they might like.

Nope. Two different genres. They blend together sometimes, but punk grind does not equal crust.

I can totally appreciate this. I guess I am all over the map as to what I like vs what I don't. I'll give anything a listen once regardless of genre. Being a product of the 80's you guys would be mortified at some of the stuff I like lol

I dunno, perhaps I'm kind being kind of elitist, but all grind is "punk grind" to me and "tech grind" is a complete oxymoron. When a band displays technical prowess aside from blast beats, they just become a death/black metal band in my eyes.

Discordance Axis is also a freak, one of a kind band that while I like (not the album you mentioned as much as Jouhou, but I digress), they're such an oddball band that I would never tell people they're essential and I also get skeptical whenever someone who likes grind lists this as one of their favorite bands.
