fudge! I typed out this whole thing and then my phone lost it. GE had a set of plug in cars. they made like 2000 of them? and then recalled all of them for no reason and destroyed them.

the batteries almost never have to be replaced.
There's no definitive word on replacement costs because they are almost never replaced. According to Toyota, since the Prius first went on sale in 2000, they have not replaced a single battery for wear and tear.
the batteries are kept between 30% and 70% charged which is the "sweet spot" for them.

that was GM not GE. Yea so that was the whole "who killed the electric car thing" i think. Its really fucking expensive to start a car company and there are countless requirements to sell new roadworthy cars. this is another govt is run by oil monsters scenario. there was an incredibly long waiting list for the EV1s or ev2s or something and they all got cancelled. and cars were crushed.

If they make a 300hp full-size hybrid pick-up, I would certainly buy it. Until then, the available models do not serve my redneck purposes.

GM makes some useless abortion, where cylinders shut off when the truck is idling or something like that. I haven't heard of any true hybrids in a half-ton pick-up -- let me know if I am wrong.

I found what you were talking about. that sounds lame... 1/2 of that is what your car battery does from the alternator anyhow.

CHEVY SILVERADO/GMC SIERRA
The Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra hybrid, the world’s first full-size gas/electric hybrid pickup, features GM’s 5.3-liter V-8 and four-speed automatic, coupled with hybrid technology that, GM says, delivers up to 13 percent better fuel economy — 18 city/20 hwy, according to the EPA. The result is the best pickup mpg and reduced emissions.
Like other hybrids, these pickups boast an engine start/stop function to save gas, along with regenerative braking, which turns the electric motor into a generator to charge batteries during deceleration. Extra fuel savings come from shutting off fuel when the truck is coasting or braking. The electric motor does not assist the gas engine as in other hybrids.
At a stoplight, the gas engine stops, but accessories continue working on stored electrical power. When the light turns green and the driver releases the brake, the gasoline engine seamlessly kicks on.
Among unique features are four 120-volt, 20 amp electrical auxiliary power outlets under the rear seat and in the pickup bed that can accommodate up to four accessories. With this auxiliary generator capability, the truck's generator can operate when the truck is parked without a key in the ignition and can be used to power anything from tools at a construction site to appliances at a campsite.
It debuts this fall in Florida, California, Nevada, Alaska, Oregon and Washington. Price: $32,695.

Could you actually show up to a worksite without getting a hammer rifled at your head for driving a hybrid?

Yeah, it's pretty weak. I think my Tundra is rated for 15 city/18 highway, so the "hybrid" Silverado really isn't all that much better. Plus Toyota makes a better truck anyway -- no wonder GM's stock has been in the shitter.

i wouldnt go electric on a work truck... electronic things dont do well under strain. like even in powerful cordless drills and stuff. if you wanna improve ur gas milage id get one of these... i wanna do this to my van but i have to fix a bunch of other shit first http://www.fuel-from-water.com/

yeah alex, cause you use a non-electric drill? how's that gas powered drill doing ya?!?

that water product sounds like some bull shit.

It is called cylinder shut-off. It's a V8 (LS1, the 350) that runs on only 4 cylinders when driving normally to save gas mileage, but when you need some aggressive driving, the other four cylinders kick in, adding a lot more power and torque. They're in the new Impalas and a few other cars, and they will be in the new Camaro SS when it comes out.

compressed air. u cant drill heavy metal very well with an electric drill... i mean maybe some crazy expensive drill with lots of horse power. if you are drilling stuff all the time like at an amature machine shop chances are you shouldnt be mucking around with 19.2volt craftsman special. as for cars they have had compressed air cars but they really sucked... they were produced in mexco for a while i think. basically itll be alot harder to make a tough electric truck and it should be focused on less than making passanger vehicles.

I knew you were going to come back with compressed air.

Kinslayer said:Well if you want/need and SUV, which my mother does, and you care about the environment/saving $$ on gas, then NO. A hybrid SUV isn't an oxy moron as implied above...

What is it with moms and SUV's? You'd have to pry my mom's explorer away from her cold dead hands.

well its similar to gaspowered engines. instead of the the expansion from an explosion its the expansion from compressed air.

kinslayer: yea honestly i bet your mom does not need an suv. maybe a large car with lots of space but not a car with big wheels and big engine. and honestly probably not even 4wd or Awd if shes got that. unless she enjoys doing donuts on the soccer field.

Why would you do donuts with 4WD or AWD? THe point of those is to add better traction and not lose control. Donuts are best with RWD.

[Mar 16,2007 2:29pm - the_reverend ""]
depends how big you want the donuts to be.

[Mar 16,2007 2:36pm - immortal13 ""]
The thing is the best way to do donuts is to floor (or clutch drop with a standard) it with the wheel turned, that way you're burning out, which makes for awesome donuts. But with 4WD or AWD, it's damn hard to do a burnout with having shitloads of torque cuz there isn't one axle that's pushing too hard for the other, because they're both working together.

yeah, nice auger. I would always use a pick... ice spade.. or whatever. you know the long heavy pole with the blade at the bottom and if you didn't put the rope around your wrist you lost it quickly.

[Mar 16,2007 2:48pm - largefreakatzero ""]
Yup, I have one of those too. Once the ice gets over 10" or so, picks are pretty painful to use.

u can do 360s in awd cars. u just need to get a head start. i was more referning to the big wheels tho... not the 4wd feature. i have wasted way too much time doing donuts in rw,fw and even a few awd cars. fw drive cars are actually the most fun in the snow cuz u can drift 180 and then slam it in reverse and floor it to make it all the way around. but yea i wasnt really trying to point out what cool tricks she could do in her suv. ... once i got a jeep cherokee rwd for 200 bucks. shit was awesome, so strong i go tthat thing like 3 feet in the air driving near these power lines in Lexington behind minuteman. and i would hit 1foot curbs head on at like 40mph and it would kinda ollie. im surprised that nothing crucial broke... just the clutch went and i got rid of it.
